Our Christmas Party for the children in our Families Programme took place on the 25th of November. This year we also included the kids from Lerato Health and Fitness, the aftercare that we support. 135 children in total joined us for the day – certainly a day they will never forget!

We had an amazing support for the party this year, with 9 major sponsors, and 68 volunteers arriving to assist us. Africa Food for Thought is so grateful to everyone who supported this day!

The children arrived and found their group t-shirts and arrival snack waiting for them. These shirts help us keep track of which children belong to which community (and make sure they get back on the right bus at the end of the day!) and the healthy snacks mean they have something solid to keep them going before they hit all of the sugar at the party! Volunteers also received a shirt and snack pack on registration, and were assigned to their party team.

Once the kids had their snacks, the party started for real! The kids have the freedom to choose which stations they want to visit, and in what order. The stations were: faceprinting, nail polish, hairspray, juice & water, popcorn, candy floss, the foam tunnel, the avalanche slide, and the GI jumping castle. These kept the kids busy for quite a long time! This was the first year we have had water and foam slides and they were a HUGE hit on a hot day! Even some of the volunteers joined the fun.

The highlight of the party is the arrival of Santa! Each year, two of our wonderful sponsors join us in the role of Mother Christmas, and take time to sit with each child. It’s really special for the children to interact with these ladies, and the printed photo they receive remains a treasured possession for many years. This year the arrival was extra special, with Fidelity SecureFire providing us with two firetrucks, and treating the kids to a ‘hosing down’ after safely delivering their Santas. The kids absolutely loved getting sprayed (with child-safe bubble bath) and cooling off, even if it did make for some slightly soggy children in some of of their Santa photos!

After lunch and ice cream, the kids played a little more, and then it was time for them to go home. As they lined up to get into their buses, each child received a brand-new backpack sponsored by Bizmod! What a treat!

All of our chaperones said that the children couldn’t stop talking about how much fun they had had on the way home. What a special day!
